The primary difference between indoor and outdoor tanning is that the amount and type of light used for indoor tanning is carefully balanced - reducing the burning rays and optimizing the tanning rays. Used in conjunction with controlled exposure time, this results in a prescribed amount of sun.
Classic Tan offers a variety of traditional horizontal tanning beds as well as vertical systems. All of our traditional systems are high performance systems, unlike many of our competitors who utilize more basic units.
With this style of tanning, we recommend that our clients exercise a slower approach, especially in the beginning, which would necessitate 6-10 visits to get a base tan and then one session every 3-6 days to maintain it; however, Classic Tan does not recommend tanning every day, but rather every other day at most.
We have been offering mattress-style tanning since 1987. The earlier beds were effective, but they weren’t even close to what we offer now. The modern beds are far nicer to use and deliver superior results even faster
One of the beautiful things about the SunSport / Chronos tanning systems is that the burning rays are minimized and the tanning rays are maximized. The odds of overexposure are quite low, but we can opt to reduce the exposure time by a few minutes if you are fair-skinned or have not tanned in a while. We do recommend that you gradually expose parts of the body not normally exposed to sunlight over time for tanning but, all in all, there are few problems.
The reason that the SunSport / Chronos tan lasts so long is that unlike natural sunlight, our systems do not dry out the skin which increases the exfoliation process. Your skin, therefore, will not only stay silky smooth, but maintain its natural 28-day exfoliation cycle, which means a longer lasting tan. With all other forms of traditional tanning (indoors or out) the burning rays, even in small enough amounts that will not burn, will dry out the skin and increase the cycle of exfoliation from once every 28 days to once every 5-10 days. This increased exfoliation will take the tan with it, requiring many more visits to maintain your tan.
Your skin is capable of absorbing a lot of tanning rays. The problem with regular tanning beds is that the level of burning rays is much higher so the burning rays chase you out of the bed or booth before the tanning rays can do their job. With the SunSport / Chronos tanning system, the burning rays are much lower, and the tanning rays 3-4 times more amplified than what is found in traditional equipment. This results in a rich, golden brown tan in just 3-4 visits.
Well it’s true that UVA rays can be aging rays. UV light is broken down into different categories, and even within the UVA category there are different types.
UVA light in the 315-340 NM range can over time (depending on your skin type) be a contributing factor in the photo aging process. The SunSport / Chronos tanning system utilizes a special glass in between your skin and the lamps which filters out the majority of UV light in this range, leaving you with the purest forms of UV light above 340 nanometers. This is why we call it the gentlest, yet most effective, portion of the UV spectrum for tanning.
All tanning salons and all tanning beds are not created equal. At Classic Tan, we’ve addressed all of the technical parameters, such as airflow and electrical requirements, to keep our beds in optimum shape. We also import hand-made lamps directly from Germany in order to derive a much higher level of performance from our tanning systems, which few salons utilize.
You don’t see them everywhere because these tanning systems are high-end investments, at about $60,000 per room. Very few salon owners care enough about their clients to provide them with this level of quality or they don't realize that you want the best.
The SunSport is mattress style tanning where you tan one side at a time affording more relaxation and escapism. Remember only 3-4 visits per month! The Chronos is a shorter session because it tans from both sides and the session is 13 minutes. The shorter session fits the bill when you want in and out faster with the same great results. But we have a whole family of beds wich includes the Magic,SunSport Platinum and the Saturn. Visit our equipment page for more details.
We always recommend that you schedule your tanning sessions 48-72 hrs apart. There are two reasons for this: 1) your skin needs a chance to regenerate melanin. Melanin is what absorbs UV light and gives you a tan. By allowing sufficient time between sessions, you are maximizing your results. 2) Even though these are very gentle and effective systems for tanning, there is still a small chance of overexposure especially if you are fair skinned or dealing with parts of the body that are rarely exposed in the sun. Even with minimal (5% residual) overexposure, which you wouldn’t probably notice, your skin could become quite irritated if exposed again the very next day.
A tan, whether gotten naturally or via tanning systems, will not give you total protection from the sun down south. As a rule of thumb, pre tanning will give you, depending on your skin type, roughly the equivalent of an SPF4 to an spf 8 built into your skin. We always recommend that you are careful when going into natural sunlight: use a sunscreen intelligently, and avoid excessive sunlight, especially between 11 am and 3 pm .The sun is natural and very healthy for you,(so are sun beds) just know your limits.
A professional, high quality indoor tanning lotion should always be used with these systems so that you get the best results. If you are not using an indoor tanning product, your skin may be slightly dry. Dry skin is white, and whiteness reflects light away, so you will not derive the full benefit of the system. A proper indoor tanning system will hydrate your skin and make it more receptive to UV light allowing your skin to absorb the maximum amount of light. They also contain a nutrient complex that mimics those found naturally occurring in the skin. These nutrients help the skin to produce more melanin. More melanin equals more color. All of the lotions that we carry are also very high quality skin care products. They contain many of the latest advances in skin care.
Tanning beds are the most efficient delivery system for vitamin D3 on the planet. You will produce anywhere between 10,000-20,000 IU’s of natural vitamin D from one single tanning session! We actually have a special meter wich calculates the amount produced. Fair skinned people produce it quicker, darker skin types require more exposure. Vitamin D is really something that you should learn about. It can save your life.
Great question, glad you asked. Humans have successfully co existed with the sun since the dawn of humanity. UV light is UV light regardless of the source. Too much from a tanning bed is like too much from the sun. Too little from a tanning bed is like too little sun. No sunlight is no sunlight, regardless how you avoid it. And the mortality rate from no sun is estimated to be anywhere from 200-500 in comparison to every single occurrence from too much sun. Makes you wonder doesn’t it? Well if you want some the answers read the “crime report” document below. And email a copy to any anti tanning (but wrongly informed) friends you have. It will change their opinion.
